Egress - Egress refers to the term used to describe the movement of people through a building in the case of an Emergency.
1. Stair Signs
Stair identification is required on both sides of the wall of a stair case.
A. The hall side stair sign is straight forward. This verifies that the door is to the stairwell.
B. The inside stairwell sign is more complex. It carries information on the Level, the Stairwell Identity (if there is more than one stairwell in the building ie. Stair A), and what floor to exit on and in some cases if there is Roof Access.
2. Fire Evacuation Plans
These signs can come in two formats.
A. A permanent map
B. A map holder with an insert containing the evacuation map.
In either case a route will need to be established from the Blue Prints. Check to make sure the file is compatible with a typical illustration program. Evacuation signs are required near the elevator and in some cases, like a hotel, are required in every room.
3. Area of Refuge
Area of refuge is a location in a building designed to hold occupants during a fire or other emergency, when evacuation may not be safe or possible. Occupants can wait there until rescued or relieved by firefighters.
4. Elevator signs ( In case of fire use stairs )
In the case of an emergency a sign is required to use the stair and not the elevator.
5. Maximum Occupancy & No Smoking
These signs are required in rooms where the number of people is limited by fire regulation.
